SHIASAT PLAI FESTIVAL

Mro are the endangered indigenous groups among those who live in Bangladesh. They have a history of very old culture which can be explored through their oral literature as it had no alphabetical system until the time when the Christian missionaries introduced a system to write the language with. There are almost 24,000 Mro who live at CHT. Different festivities are celebrated by them on the eve of different occasions all through the year.

The rich Mro families arrange Shiasat Plai festival after the Jum harvest. ‘Shiasat’ means cow slaughtering and ‘Plai’ means dance. This festival normally takes place from the month December to February. The Mro young men and women dance with the music of Plung flute around the cow which is prepared to be slaughtered. At a certain moment, the organizer of the festival tells to hit the cow with lance. The Mro people then feel joy seeing the blood of the wounded cow. Then they kill the cow and satisfy their stomach with its meat. The tongue of the cow is hanged with a long stick at a certain place of the area where the festival is celebrated. The Mro people do not need any priest for this festival. The old of the community organize the event which certainly reflects the social system of the community.
