SANGRAI FESTIVAL

Marma is one of the largest ethnic groups in Bangladesh who live in Chittagong Hill Tracts mostly. There are almost 43,000 Marma people who live in Bangladesh. The prime festival of this community is Sangrai which is observed in different names by most of the indigenous communities in Bangladesh.

Generally, this event is celebrated according to the lunar month of Burmese year. The Marma people celebrate the festival on the last two days of the month of Chaitra of Burmese year and first day of the New Year. Sangrai is a great event to the Marma. They celebrate the event by forgetting the sorrows of the past year and welcoming the New Year hoping for the best. People from all levels of the society take part in the festival. The young Marma men and women play water game with each other. Lovers tell their words of heart to their dear one. People make traditional cake in their houses. They are engaged in worshipping the Buddha and elders. They enjoy the day with a great color of enthusiasm and natural beauty.
