MODHUMELA

Michael Modhusudan Datta, a great poet of Bangla literature was born on 1824 at the village Sagardari of Jessore district. He had a great fascination for English literature from his early childhood. He changed his religion to Christianity and also changed his name. Modhusudan went to Europe to study English literature. His first English writing was ‘Captive Lady’. But he was not successful in practicing English Literature. That’s why he came back to his own home to express his philosophical thoughts in his mother tongue in 1843.

Michael gave Bangla literature a new dimension. He introduced sonnet for the first time. He also introduced a form of blank verse in Bangla poetry. He was the first one who was a successful epic writer. His first epic was 'eghnathbodh Kabbo'. His innovative ideas also introduced comedy and tragedy writings in Bangla literature. His courageous and innovative contribution to Bangla literature has made it enriched. This great poet died on 1873 at Calcutta.

Every year in remembrance of Modhusudan, a fair is held at the village Sagardari where he was born. The fair is called Modhumela locally. His residential place has been gone under project by Archaeological department of Bangladesh Government. They built a sculpture of Modhusudan there. Different kind of programs is organized on the occasion of Modhumela like Jatra, Putul Nach (doll dance), musical program etc. The fair starts on the birth date of the poet and goes on for several days. It’s a great initiative to remember a great poet of Bangla literature.
