HOKTOI FESTIVAL

Khasia are an indigenous community who live in the southern side of the country mostly. As other indigenous people, they are also physically very much strong and hard worker. According to the census of 1991, the number of Khasia living in Bangladesh is 12,300 though it is claimed by them that they are more in number than this figure. Khasia people are short in height. They are engaged in various kinds of profession. Khasia children can be found working in the tea gardens. They like to build their houses in hills. Almost 80 percent of the population has become Christian. But still, they practice their own culture, customs and rituals. Khasia are matriarchal society. So, women choose their own bridegroom.

Hoktoi is the religious festival of the Khasia. They celebrate the festival for two days. The event is celebrated by the Khasia to pray for the peace of the soul who died and for the welfare of the next generation. They cook different kinds of foods and serve fruits to the guest. It is been said that, ‘better the dance, better the crop’ by the Khasia people which has made them skilled in their own dimension of dancing. Such festivals are really part our culture which has made it more diversified.
