BAISUK FESTIVAL

The Tripura are one of the largest ethnic communities in Bangladesh. According to the census of 1991, the number of Tripura living in the country is 80,000 which have certainly increased in the last 18 years. Tripura largely live in Chittagong Hill Tracts. The name of their language is Kakbarok which has originated from Tibeto-Burmese language family. Besides CHT, they also live in Comilla, Moulavibazar, and Sylhet etc. Tripura has their own way of living life and they are quite different from others in their customs, rituals and cultural values. Though they are vastly affected by other cultures around them, they always try to keep their distinct cultural values intact. There are several types of dances which the Tripuras have skilled through the cultural spirit of many years. The mentionable dances are Godaia dance, Katharak dance, Ker Worship dance etc.

Baisuk is the major festival of the Tripura. They forget the sorrowing of the previous year and welcome the New Year on the eve of this festival. This festival is similar to the Bangalee’s New Year reception program but they celebrate the occasion in their own way. They celebrate the day by singing, dancing and doing other entertaining things. They also worship Lord Shiva on this occasion praying for his blessing in the New Year. The festival lasts for three days. On the first day of the festival, the young Tripuras decorate their houses with colorful flowers and papers. They wear new dresses and go to the houses of their relatives. A group of 15 dancers begin to dance to celebrate the festival colorfully.
