Khulna is situated on the south west corner of Bangladesh. There are different sayings about the origin of the name of khulna. But the most popular say is that there was a village named “Kismat Khulna” in the eastern side of the city and opposite to the river. By deducting “Kismat” the name khulna was established. However some says that the name khulna origins from the word “Khulenshori Kali Mondir”.

As per academic statistics (2003): Khulna has Primary School- 1193, High school- 393, College- 65, Madrasa- 110.

Khulna City has two rivers- Rupsha and Bhairab flowing. Other rivers of the district are Poshur (Mongla), Kopotakha (jessore), Shibsha and Bhodra

Travelling places include Botanical Garden, Zoo, Kalibari temple, Rupsha Bridge, Shipyard etc.

Khulna is famous for some of its great persons like Acharja Profullo Chandar, Poete Kishna Chandra Majumder, Kizi Imdadul Hoque, Justice Gazi Shamsur Rahman, Hassan Azizu Hoque, Poet Abul Hossain and many others.
