Sonargaon - The Ancient City of Culture

Bangladesh has always been in centre of attraction from ancient times. It was so enchanting to people for its culture, wealth, resources and stunning natural beauty. For these reasons many foreign kings and emperors tried to rule this land. No one was fully successful but they did manage to gain fair bit of control. To see and feel the evolution of cultural trends during different dynasties one must visit Sonargaon or he/she will never get the full flavor of Bengali culture.

Sonargaon is located just 29 km from Dhaka. It was the capital of ancient Bengal before Dhaka was made the capital. It has two other names by which it was known to the people of that time; the names are: - Panama, Shuvarnagram. It became the most important place in Bengal during the 13th century. Then the whole Indian sub-continent was ruled by the famous Mughal emperor Akbar. And the Bengal was controlled by the 12 Bhuiyan. The most famous and the leader of the 12 Bhuiyan was Isha Khan. The capital of Isha Khan was the Panam nagar present Sonargaon. Akbar tried hard to conquer Bengal but failed to do that for the strong resistance from Sonargaon than capital of Bengal. After sometime Akbar did manage to pursue Isha Khan to accept the rule of Mughals. But later in the Mugal period the capital was shift to Dhaka and Sonargaon lost its glory gradually.

There are many things to see for the visitors traveling to Shonargaon, specially the monuments build by the Mughals. Tomb of Ghiasuddin Azam Shah (1410 A.D.), Goaldi Mosque (1519 A.D.), Panam Bridge (17th Century A.D.), Tomb of Panch pir (17th Century A.D.), Tomb of Manna Shah (Medival Period), Damsmah Fort (15th Century A.D.), Tomb of Ibrahim Danishamanid (Early medival period) are the historical monuments which you must see in Sonargaon. There is also a museum called the Jainal Abedin Museum. It’s a very rich museum with ancient artifacts of Bengali culture.

As Sonargaon is only 29 km away from Dhaka you can visit and see all the places to see in Sonargaon within a day and come back. There are local buses which run daily all day long from Dhaka to Sonargaon. You can rent a car or hire taxi cabs to go to Sonargaon.

To know Bangladesh and its people better one has to know its customs and culture with the origin. And a trip to Sonargaon will enrich your knowledge about Bangladesh and Bangladeshi culture. Also the experience you will get at Sonargaon is invaluable and will be a prize possession for you as long as you live.
