Background:

One of the prime attractions in northern side of Bangladesh is Mahasthangarh. It used to be capital of Kingdom of the Mourjo, Gupta and Sena Dynasty. This ancient archaeological and historical site was established back in 2500 B.C. It is termed as the most ancient archaeological region of Bangladesh, which is located on the west side of the bank of river Karatoa. The region is only 18 kilometers away from Bogra town. Total area enclosing Mahasthangarh is about 2.09 Square Kilometers with an average height of 15 foot from surrounding golden lash of paddy fields. Other ancient ruins are spread out with a semicircle of 24 kilo meter radius.

The city is surrounded by several isolated mounds (Tillas), which are locally named as ‘Govinda Bhita Temple’, ‘Khodai Pathar Mound’, ‘Mankalir Kunda’, ‘Parasuramer Bedi’, ‘Jiyat Kunda’ etc.

Bathing Ceremony: This 3rd century archaeological site is of special importance to the Hindu community till today as they believe this to be a sacred place of holiness. As a result, thousands of Hindu devotees gather here in mid – April every year to join the ‘Bathing Ceremony’ here on the bank of river Karatoa. This bathing ceremony has yet another mega dimension which takes place once in every 12 years, usually in the month of December.

Mahasthangarh Museum is a must place one should visit. This Mahasthangarh museum is a footprint of the golden old times where you will find exquisite terracotta objects, gold ornaments and ancient coins. Bangladesh archeological Department has termed Mahasthangarh as one of the most important tourist spots. Another tourist attraction here in Mahasthangarh is the Mohasthan Buddhist Pillar (Buddhist Stambho) which is locally known as Behula’s Basar (The Bride chamber of Behula).

Transport:

Mahasthangarh is about only 10 kilometers from Bogra town. Before you visit this place, you have to go Bogra from Dhaka. The most convenient way to go to Bogra from Dhaka is by road, for which one can avail the bus services. One can also travel to Bogra by train. Once in Bogra, it is easy to go Mahasthangarh any time with the local bus services.
