Sunrise and sunset from same place is a unique experience and very hard to find. But what if that unique and rare place also has sandy beach of blue bay, where boats are plying with colorful sails, waves are great for surfing and bathing, and lots of coconut trees standing like body guard to a naturally beautiful daughter of the sea; These make the place magical which you had to see to feel its magic. And Kuakata is the place where you will find all of these and much more. That’s why people call it the “Daughter of the SEA”.

Kuakata is an exceptionally attractive beauty spot on the southernmost tip of Bangladesh. Kuakata is in Latachapli union under Kalapara Police Station of Patuakhali district which is about 30 km in length and 6 km in breadth. It stands in 70 km from Patuakhali district headquarters and 320 km from Dhaka. At Kuakata, there are excellent combination of the picturesque natural beauty, sandy beach, blue sky, huge expanse of water of the Bay and evergreen forest which are really eye-catching.

The unique custom and costumes of the 'Rakhyne' tribal families and Buddhist Temple of about hundred years old are reflecting the ancient tradition and cultural heritage. That’s why people visiting Kuakata find interest in the Buddhist temples located at nearby places such as Keranipara, Misripara, and Amkholapara, while many others find the place interesting because of the unique customs and traditions of the Rakhain community. Not only that, Kuakata is the place of pilgrimage of the Hindu and Buddhist communities Innumerable devotees arrive here during the festival of 'Rush Purnima' and 'Maghi Purnima'. On these occasions they take holy bath and traditional fairs are held here. Visitors enjoy these traditional fairs organized to mark these celebrations. All these extraordinary events in addition to panoramic beauty make the beach more attractive to the visitors.

History of the Name

Kuakata is a Bengali name which means digging a well. It’s an interesting story of how Kuakata got its name. The story is very old and tells the custom of the people lived here in ancient time. The name Kuakata originated from the word Bengali word kua, which means well. It is believed that the early RAKHAIN settlers found it difficult to get fresh drinking water in the place and they had to dig (kata) wells (kuas) to solve the problem. As this place has many wells and which are very important for the survival of the people lived here they named it after the wells as “Kuakata”.

Things to Do and to See

You can do all the things that can be done in sea beaches like sea-bathing, surfing etc. But there are some unique things that Kuakata offers, such as:-

  • Sunrise & Sunset'point on the beach. From these points you will be able to get the experience of seeing sunrise and sunset at the same place.
  • Jhaubon, it’s located alongside the beach.
  • Lemur Char, accessible by Motorcycle & Jeep-car. You will get the feeling to live in a deserted place.
  • Fatrar Dip, accessible by Boat & Trawler. The sight is same as Lemur Char but the means of transportation is different.
  • Misripara – Situated at Rakhain Village. It encloses a Buddhist Temple which has a statue of Buddha of about 30 feet high. The road communication to this village is not good though. Motorcycle is the only good choice of transport to visit here.
  • Rakhain Market near the beach. A nice place for shopping and to get souvenirs for remembering Kuakata.

Transportation

There exists road communication between Dhaka and Patuakhali district headquarters. Road, water or air transports are only accessible up to Barisal. Getting in Kuakata is a 2 phase journey. First you have to go from DHAKA to BARISHAL. There are private launch & bus service available for this journey. The 2nd phase is to travel from BARISHAL to KUAKATA. You may travel by road or water to Khulna/Patuakhali. There are some bus services available in the Barishal Launch Port. These buses render daily trip to Kuakata via Khulna and Patuakhali. This trip takes about 5-6 hours due to bad road condition. In this 2nd phase trip there are 5 Ferries. Recently BRTC (Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation) has introduced direct bus service from Dhaka to Kuakata via Barisal.

Communication and Network

The communication here in Kuakata wasn’t very good 4 years ago. But now a day’s government has put much effort to develop the communication and network system. That’s why in present day Kuakata has all the modern communication system. It has all the country’s mobile phone networks here; Grameen Phone, Banglalink, Aktel, Citycell, Taletalk, Warid. So you can communicate with the world and even you can browse through internet from your mobile phone.

The name of the article says it all about Kuakata. It’s truly a beloved place of the sea and nature. And the sight at sunrise & sunset is so unique that you will not find any sight similar to it in anywhere in the world.
